New York didn't forgive easily and it sure didn't invite everyone who wanted to crash its centuries-old party. It didn't sleep and those who so much as tried to take a nap had to eventually move to Jersey or Connecticut or points further out.

Janice drank a Greyhound at the bar as she reflected on her last serious relationship with a renegade member of Los Macheteros. She did all she could to keep him away from post offices, but someone eventually figured out he was wanted for acts of domestic terrorism and hauled him off to jail.

Too bad. He made a mean mofongo.

It had been almost a year since Alberto got tossed in the Big House. Janice rolled with the single life, though. It wasn't like New York didn't have enough to do. Between used book dealers and rock clubs, Janice kept herself quite occupied. Tonight, though...

6'4" of leather-clad tough guy sidled up to Janice's side. "Hey there, mind if I sit next to you?"

"Mind? Not yet. You got thirty seconds to impress me. Then I mind."

"Impress? How about I drink a Clamato and not throw up?"

"Ew. If you impressed me, why would I want to kiss you?"

"All right. I bet I can drop this handkerchief on a drink and consume said drink without disturbing the handkerchief."

"OK. I'll bite. What are you drinking?"

"Manhattan."

Sammie ordered the Manhattan and tough guy dropped a hanky on it, covering the whole glass. He then went under the bar and made gulping noises.

"It's all gone. That was delicious, thanks."

"No way in hell. It's still there."

"Don't believe me? Typical."

"You're full of it."

"Check for yourself."

Janice snatched up the handkerchief and the tough guy grabbed the drink and drank it down. "Thanks. And even if you're not impressed, I got a free drink." His big grin said he wanted more than just a little boozing.

"You earned yourself a stool next to me. What's your name?"

"Carmine. What's yours?"

"Buy me a drink and I'll tell you."

And so, two people who would never move to Jersey or Connecticut had the beginnings of a beautiful friendship that night.

And Carmine also made a mean mofongo. Who knew?

"Bonne nuit, vous êtes tous beau. Vous avez été merveilleuse. Nous vous verrons bientôt. Bonne nuit. "

Catherine waved to the audience, blew them kisses, and retreated to backstage. There wasn't anything in the world like an excited French audience. Anyone in America could get a standing ovation, but the French were much more discriminating. For them to react the way they were tonight, Catherine had to be doing magic on the stage.

She drank some bottled water and toweled down. Makeup put a fresh face on her as the crowd started the rhythmic clapping to demand an encore. One more swig of water and Catherine made her way back to the stage.

The crowd gave her so much energy. She started her encore set with her cover of Sly and the Family Stone's "I Want to Take You Higher." She never allowed it to be on any of her albums, so it would always be a treat for the fans who saw her live.

After the concert, Catherine enjoyed a wonderful end of the tour party. Relaxed in a large leather chair backstage, she let the champagne and the evening swirl together in her mind. Some of the kids in the road crew had started a cake fight, but she let the tour manager worry about it. He knew how to keep the cake from landing on the talent.

"Heeeeeeeeey, great show! You really wowed 'em."

Some lizard dressed as a record executive managed to get past the tour manager, it seemed. "Go away. I want to be happy."

"Heeeeeeeeey, I want you to be happy, too, that's why I came here to talk about boosting your American sales."

"Go away. I don't care about my American sales. I'm perfectly happy doing what I'm doing and if it's a hit here and not back home, then too bad for me. Now go away." Catherine didn't like the direction her mind had started to take.

"It's really simple. We get you to do a few duets with some country-crossover stars or maybe some hip-hop acts and let the CD sell itself, whaddya say?"

"Are any of these people clamoring to work with me?"

"Not yet, but I'm sure the deal wouldn't take long to work out and-"

"Then why should we work together if it's some sort of forced commercialism? I am an artist, do you understand that? An artist! No, you don't understand that. You're a... a... a whatever you are. Go back to your people and tell them I am not interested, not one bit, not one small bit in forcing my artistic integrity to fit into their tiny wallets. Tell them I said..."

Catherine looked up. She saw her tour manager, who was monitoring the situation. She nodded to him and he moved into action.

She looked back at the record company leech. "Tell them I said, les laisser manger le gâteau"

"What does that mean?"

"Let them eat cake." As Catherine said that, the young roadies added an unsuspecting leech to their cake-fighting frenzy.
